What is our reason for being here?
- Our prime motivation should be that “We Love God.” and desire to serve and obey Him.
- Our secondary motivation should be that “We Love people” enough to sacrifice for them.
- We should be here because we want to serve God and fulfill the great commission.
- We should be here because we are called to this ministry. Many are called, but few chosen.
Are we prepared and ready to go?
- Spiritually - Are you walking in the Spirit and trusting God to use you and produce results?
- Do we know the Lord intimately? His voice should be familiar to us and our voice to Him.
- Do we know the Word of God well? People will want answers. Are we ready to give them?
- Do we have any idea of what we will encounter as we go? Of course we can't know everything.
- Are we ready for rejection? Jesus made it clear that the world would reject his servants.
- Are we ready to minister to drug and alcohol users? What do we know of this life/culture?
- Are we ready if we should encounter demon oppressed or possessed people? Would we know the difference? Do we believe that if we resist the devil he will flee from us?
- Are we ready to answer people from the various cults (JW or Mormon)? How about religions?
- Are we teachable and willing and able to follow instructions? The lead best who serve most.
Some Personal Experiences on the Street.
- Fort Lauderdale, Florida - The city turned off our water supply.
- The Hare Krishna selling books -- I insulted his religion. What would you have done?
- The Run-Around Guy -- He ran me around in circles. What would you have done?
- Would you turn the other cheek? -- I said, "I Don't Know " What would you have done?
- Old Hondo -- I Told him a Bible man would make him look like a punk. What would you have done?
- The young girl scantily dressed -- Told her what men might think. What would you have done?
- Special experiences -- My first opportunity, and giving up my Bible to a young couple. The turkey sandwich with mustard and the hamburger prayer answered.
- Jacksonville, Florida
- Giving my Bible to Omar -- He cursed Jesus. Green plasma came out of his mouth. What would you have done?
- The Hare Krishna on the street corner -- I commanded him to leave in the name of Jesus. What would you have done?
Other special experiences
- The demon controlled man in Fountain Square in Cincinnati, Ohio. Rebuked him in Jesus' name.
- From “falling down drunk” to totally sober in Sunbury. God sobered my friend up.
- Two Young girls on either Huntington or Newport Beach in California. Led them to the Lord.
- The Homosexual convert on one of those beaches in California. Rejoiced at his salvation.
- The planned prisoner disruption at Northumberland County Prison. A very quiet Bible study.
- Arrested and put in prison for ministering in a shopping center. I was with many men of God and we sang, studied the scriptures, and were able to lead two men up for murder to the Lord.
SOME FOOD FOR THOUGHT WHEN EVANGELIZING
The following are scattered thoughts that would be wise for you to consider before you commit to this ministry of evangelism.
The Kind of Person God Uses
- A person who will pay any price to obey God. (Even if it means giving up his or her life)
- A serious student of God’s Word. We must have an answer for every person from scripture.
- A person who has a servant’s heart and can submit to others. Mark 10:45 KJV
- A willing instrument who will obey authority. We are commanded to obey those over us.
- A person who has deliberately chosen to take up his or her cross to follow Jesus. No compromise.
- A person with a supreme love for Jesus above all others and all else in life. Includes everyone.
- A person who has chosen to deny self for the sake of Christ and others. Sacrificial living.
- A person who has surrendered their will to God and won’t turn back. Full consecration.
- A person who exercises all the above from the heart and not just mental acceptance. Amen!
Hindrances to Godly Living and Evangelism
- A high opinion of yourself. ( Pride ) My favorite remedy for this is Isaiah 40:17 KJV
- Too much love of earthly comforts to make sacrifices especially in inconvenient times.
- Making excuses. God is not looking for excuses ( Moses/Jeremiah) He is looking for results.
- Ties to family and things that hinder our walk with the Lord. These must have their right place.
Ministering in any capacity (ie; streets, prisons, church, etc.)
- Be a good listener – “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”
- Choose the questions you want to answer and ignore the rest.
- Show the person their need by asking questions that will expose their need.
- Tell them the truth even if you think it will hurt. (for instance, "suicide is a selfish act."
- Keep control of the conversation so it doesn’t get off the subject. Difficult but doable.
- Listen to their concept of who Jesus is. Vitally important. So much depends on this.
- Remember that we are reaching them for Jesus – NOT AN ORGANIZATION.
Follow Up Is Vitally Important!
- Remember that the new Christian belongs to God -- Love them as they are but mentor them!
- Do what you can to see that they are attending a church that preaches the gospel exalting Jesus.
- Get their contact information and give them yours so you can keep in constant touch with them.
- New converts need constant care like a newborn baby. Don’t overdo it and drive them away – use wisdom, and pray for direction from the Lord.
- Above all, encourage Bible Study and Prayer – do these things with them as much as you possibly can. Bible "study" and effectual prayer are the strengths of those who serve God well.
- Teach them to live an active Christian life – not a passive one. Even small tasks for the Lord.
- Help them to break free from all worldly connections – especially music and bad associations.
- Share your experiences with them so they can grow in the faith. As they grow in the faith they will begin to have their own experiences to share. Their personal testimony is a good place to start.
